digging_deeper daringfireball.net

I'm a big fan of daring fireball, it's currently the blog I follow most, although I disagree with a lot of it.

This article,

makes some great points about the "Orthogonal Rivalry between Microsoft and Apple" Apple makes money of hardware, Microsoft off software.

John Gruber, the author seems to have a strong Apple bias to me. I know have at least some windows bias. I love my IPod touch but I can't stand the UI on a Mac, I miss my right mouse button, and I miss a keyboard more like one used for windows or linux or unix.

John description of Apple's iconic Mac vs PC commericals had a line that threw me as no longer accurate (if it ever was).

"The ads are neutral, sometimes even deferential, towards Microsoft. "

More accurately, some of the ads are neutral and some few appear deferential. They are clearly Apple commercials, and they aren't comparing the Mac to a Linux or Unix box. They're comparing it to a machine running windows, probably XP at this point.

  • Yup, I think he complete missed the point.

The Mac vs PC ads are *extremely* confrontational.

The fact that the "PC" sorta likes like Gates is not a coincidence.

That's why I think Microsoft's ad is brilliant.

  • I wouldn't call Microsoft's ad campaign brilliant, but I think they need to do it, and are doing more good for their bottom line, then harm.

I'd love to see Microsoft embrace Android as running alongside Windows Mobile on HTC phones. I don't see any reason you couldn't have the same hardware run both OS, perhaps not one at the time.

I don't expect them to do anything to legitimize Android right away, Android is a direct competitor to WIMO right now, already costing Microsoft sails, and threatening to cost more.

But Android won't go away, the G1 has succeeded, and it's being followed by plenty of others.

It would be great to get Silverlight running on Android. Let Microsoft sell Excel, and Word on Android phones. Let them sell an Outlook application that integrates well with exchange.

I like running a combination of propietary and open source software myself, and typically I let Microsoft handle the things they do well.
